There are countless American stories of human determination and will
that have inspired millions around the world. President Hebert Hoover's
rise to Presidency is one such story of grit and determination. The
Herbert Hoover National historic site in Iowa preserves the birth place
of the president and tells the tale of his humble beginnings and his
subsequent journey to the highest office in the country.

This
National park vacation will be perfect for families with children. Not
only will you be able to give them a great educational experience, but
the nature trails and junior ranger programs organized by the park will
add that much needed element of fun.
The main
attraction of the park is the two room cottage that President Herbert
Hoover was born in. The cottage was built by Herbert's father and
grandfather in 1871. It stayed home to the Hoover family till 1879. The
gravesites of Herbert Hoover and his wife Lou Henry Hoover overlook the
cottage from a nearby hill. It is situated about a half a mile away from
the visitor center.
Close to the Hoover
cottage is a blacksmith shop that represents the entrepreneurial spirit
of the town and the Hoover family. President Hoover's father owned a
similar blacksmith shop back in 1871.
The
Hoover Creek that flows close to the president's birthplace silently
tells the tale of his childish pursuits and games. The tiny stream flows
into the Mississippi River and today offers great spots to spend some
leisurely afternoon hours. The nature trail with tall grass prairies
along the Hoover creek is also worth exploring.
President
Hoover lived in 'The house of Maples' for one and a half years till he
was separated from his siblings after the death of both his parents.
Though the house no longer stands, the site is marked with a sign and a
maple tree.
The Presidential Library and Museum
is another place you must visit in the park. It houses several exhibits
related to Herbert Hoover's life and career as well as a gift shop. The
Downey Street is also a popular tourist spot. The buildings,
boardwalks, fences, and lamps along the street create a setting similar
to the neighborhood that Hoover spent his childhood in.
Whether
you are planning a holiday in Iowa or want to take your children for a
small weekend break near the city, a visit to the Herbert Hoover
National Park will prove to be a great experience.
